The Best Foods and Drinks to Keep You Hydrated

Today is National Hydration Day.

When the weather heats up, staying hydrated becomes more important than ever. On hot days, your body loses fluids through sweat, even if you’re not exercising. If you don’t replace those fluids, you can start to feel tired or dizzy or you may even get a headache. Hydration also plays a big role in keeping your heart, kidneys and brain working the way they should.

Most people think of drinking water as the main way to stay hydrated, and it’s the best choice, but it isn’t your only option. Many foods and other drinks can help you stay hydrated too and enjoying them can make it easier to meet your daily fluid needs.

If you’re sweating a lot, you may also need electrolytes or salt. Electrolyte drinks, coconut water (which contains natural electrolytes) or yogurt (which contains electrolytes and protein) are good options. To increase salt intake, add a few sprinkles of sea salt to food or enjoy some pickles or sauerkraut.
