The Best Foods to Buy Organic

If you have to pick and choose which types of organic produce to buy, it can help to focus on fruits and vegetables that are more likely to contain pesticide residues when they’re grown conventionally.

Each year, the Environmental Working Group (EWG) analyzes pesticide residue testing from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and publishes its Shopper’s Guide to Pesticides in Produce™, which includes the Dirty Dozen™ and Clean Fifteen™ lists. The rankings are updated every year as new USDA data becomes available, and in 2025, EWG also updated its methodology to consider not only the number and amount of pesticide residues found but also the toxicity of those pesticides.

Here are the lists of the produce that has been shown to have the highest and lowest levels of pesticide residues when grown conventionally.
