Trinity Performs 1,000th Robotic Surgery

General Surgeon, Dr. Sam Licata, performs his 500th case robotically using the da Vinci Surgical System

Trinity Health System was the first health system to have the da Vinci Surgical System in the region, offering its patients the convenience of cutting-edge technology in their surgical procedures.

Two surgeons, Gynecologist Dr. Pat Macedonia and General Surgeon Dr. Sam Licata, were an integral part of initiating the health system’s investment in the da Vinci Surgical System.  General Surgeon Jaypal Reddy and Bariatric Surgeon Joseph Colella have also joined the robotic team.

On March 12, 2013, Dr. Sam Licata performed his first surgery robotically; and March 21, 2018he performed his 500th case using the da Vinci Surgical System.

Dr. Macedonia and Dr. Licata are thrilled see how the da Vinci System has made a pivotal difference in the method of care for patients and the results that each surgery performed robotically offers.

“The da Vinci System offers real-time, three-dimensional, high definition visualization, which allows for improved precision, dexterity, and control,” said Dr. Macedonia. “This allows surgical procedures to be even less invasive and more accurate than laparoscopic surgery, providing better quality of care for patients.”

With the ability to perform complex surgeries through a single-site incision and offer improved dexterity through use of the da Vinci System’s surgical arms, virtually all confinement of regular and laparoscopic surgery is eliminated.

“Through the da Vinci system, we can offer our patients more precise and improved surgical procedures, with a faster recovery time and a shorter length of stay at the hospital,” said Dr. Licata. “Many patients are able to have surgery in the morning and be discharged from the hospital the same day with fewer complications, returning them to their normal lifestyle almost immediately.”

Trinity also plans to expand the use of robotic surgery to include Urology and Thoracic cases.

Trinity Health System would like to thank Dr. Sam Licata and the entire robotic surgical team for their dedication and commitment to the robotics program at Trinity, as well as for being committed to providing quality patient care and services in the eastern Ohio Valley Region.
