Steubenville, Ohio—August 8, 2023—Trinity Health System’s Tony Teramana Cancer Center recently achieved the prestigious Accreditation Program for Excellence (APEx) accreditation from the American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO).
APEx is an independent radiation oncology practice accreditation program developed by ASTRO, the most prestigious radiation oncology society in the world.
In addition to distinguishing the Trinity Health System-based radiation oncology practice, which was established in collaboration with Allegheny Health Network, APEx accreditation also:
- Provides patients and caregivers with additional evidence of a focus on safety.
- Satisfies the American Board of Radiology’s Maintenance of Certification program, which is essential to providing a current highest-level standard of care.
- Fulfills the requirements of the radiation oncology component for the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer accreditation, the gold-standard certification of cancer program excellence.
The Tony Teramana Cancer Center voluntarily sought this rigorous review and certification process in order to demonstrate an ongoing commitment to the regional community.
Since its opening in 2000, the center has provided the highest level of cancer care in a unique partnership between Trinity Health System, Allegheny Health Network, and the University of Pittsburgh. It is the only center in the four-state region that combines these high-powered entities.
“This APEx accreditation proves our commitment to providing the highest standards of safety and quality,” Gretchen Heizler, Radiation Oncology Supervisor, Tony Teramana Cancer Center, said. “We practice patient-centered care by promoting effective communication, coordination of treatment, and engaging patients and their families as partners in care.”
